My dealer placed an order for a new hydrostat 4100 w/ FEL, 60" Landpride finishing mower, and R4 tires. The price came to $15,627. Before ordering, I checked with another dealer about 45 miles away who gave me an almost identical quote. Does my price sound about right? Also, I need a trailer to haul the tractor with. I'm leaning towad purchasing a 16' tandem axle trailer($1100), but the price on the 13' single axle trailer ($750) looks pretty good. Any advice?

Keith, there's been some long discussions on trailers on the forum, so maybe you can look those up, and I won't go into detail here, but you definitely ought to go with the tandem axle trailer. ....

I have a 4100, and you price sounds about average. Hope you enjoy this tractor, I do. I agree with Bird -you will be very unhappy with a single axle trailer. Definately go for the double axle. ....

Keith, I bought a JD 4300 last year with a front-end loader and a brush hog> I bought a 18' trailer thinking that I would rather have too much trailer rather than not enough. The first time I loaded the tractor with the brush hog attached I found out that I filled up the entire trailer. I recommend you take a tape measure with you and go measure the length of the tractor with the longest attachments you think you will ever have. ....

I just bought a 4100 HST, DSCV, Turf, 413 rotary cutter, 5 weights and a 48" befco box scrape with tax for $12,890. The rotary cutter and scrape were about $1500. The dealer told me that he would install a FEL for $2300 and a 60" mower for about $1200. Working backwards your price would be around $14,900. So that is in the ballpark for what you paid. As for the trailer, you NEED the tandom and it needs to be fairly heavy duty with brakes. I pull mine on a 16' and you have to be careful that the weight is over the axles and that may mean that you have space in the front of the trailer but hanging out an implement over the back. Hope this helps.

I bought a 20 ft. 7000 lb. tandem axle trailer for my JD4100 HST. when the bucket and the rake or grader box is on It's a comfortable fit. A 16 ft. trailer wouldn't be practical if your transporting the machine with implements attached. ....

I decided to road my tractor the 10-miles to our camp a few times a year rather than trailer it. The reasons were that a long trailer would be required, and the weight would be marginal for my 1/2 ton. I decided that a 5' x 8' utility trailer would be much more useful to me.
Maybe it's common knowledge, but I'll mention it anyway. The trailer length needed isn't just so the load fits in; the trailer should be long enough to get a good weight distribution. Bird mentioned awhile back that a rule of thumb is to have 10% - 15% of the load weight on the tongue. That rule could be hard to meet if the front of a short trailer is taken up by an empty loader bucket. Adding ballast in the front may not be the best idea if the gross trailer weight is already marginal for the tow vehicle. Backing a tractor on a trailer may put too much weight on the tongue. The longer a trailer is in comparison to the load, the more choice of weight distribution there is. Anyway, I guess I'm happy I don’t have a 20' trailer every time I go to the dump, which is far more often than I road the tractor.

I made a dumpster for my 3pt and when i got enough in i went to the dump cost me $18. It beats paying $45 a month for pickup service.It has already paid for making the dumpster.I have a double axle trailer that i use a lot in tje summer time.
